gedit-dev software package provides official text editor of the GNOME desktop environment (development files), you can install in your Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install gedit-dev
gedit-dev is installed in your system.
Make ensure the gedit-dev package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep gedit-dev *
You will get with gedit-dev package name, version, architecture and description in a table
